Today I will discuss a really cool feature of Mendix, the Best Practice Bot. I’ll also give you 3 practical tips on how you can use this tool to improve your development process.

What is the Best Practice Bot?

Whether you’re defining data models, designing user interfaces, or setting up microflow flows, the Best Practice Bot offers context-specific recommendations that help you adhere to best practices and avoid common pitfalls.

Because it does not only speeds up the development process but also ensures consistency and high quality across your applications. This feature is particularly advantageous for companies looking to build their own in-house development teams. Starting developers don’t need to know all the best practices upfront, as the Mendix Best Practice Bot guides them through the process. Allowing teams to quickly become the owners of their own applications, empowering them to implement changes rapidly without relying heavily on external expertise.
My 3 tips:
Incorporate into the Definition of Done
Ensure that your user stories are only marked as complete after a peer review with the Mendix Performance Bot. This means a user story should only be considered done if it does not increase the number of suggestions from the bot. This practice ensures continuous performance improvements and maintains high-quality standards.
Set regular review schedules
If your team doesn’t work with user stories, establish a routine check. For instance, designate Thursday mornings for a team member to review the apps and address the Performance Bot’s suggestions. This consistent schedule helps to keep performance optimization a regular part of your workflow.
Regularly evaluate and plan
It’s easy to get caught up in daily tasks and new feature development, but it’s crucial to set aside time for reflection and evaluation. Schedule a weekly or bi-weekly meeting with your team lead or manager to discuss long-term plans, risks, and the current state of the application. During this meeting, present a graph showing the number of suggestions from the Performance Bot. If the number of suggestions is increasing, it indicates a need to allocate time for addressing these issues to maintain the application’s quality and flexibility.
