Recently, our colleague Harmjan attended the Gartner Summit with the Mendix team, where he gathered valuable insights from a series of inspiring presentations. In the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing the key takeaways and trends we discovered. This week, we’re looking back at the top 10 most talked-about topics that took center stage at the summit.

1. Know Your “IT” Ship
CIO McHardie emphasised the importance of understanding your current systems, infrastructure, and teams. While dreaming about future innovations is crucial, making tangible progress requires a clear grasp of your portfolio. Regularly testing for gaps ensures you are prepared to navigate challenges and seize opportunities as they arise.
2. The World is Constantly Changing: People Are Your Greatest Resource
Building a no-blame culture is essential for success. Organisations must establish a clear mission where every team member feels valued and trusted. Engaged employees are the cornerstone of adaptability and resilience, enabling organisations to thrive in a rapidly evolving environment.
3. AI’s Rapid Growth: How to Keep Up
AI adoption is accelerating, yet many organisations have not yet embarked on the journey. While large enterprises lead the charge, smaller organisations can leverage AI by adopting SaaS solutions or off-the-shelf options. The key is finding the right balance and strategically leveraging AI to stay competitive.
4. Ableism and the Power of Interpretation
Haben Girma, a visually impaired speaker, delivered one of the most impactful talks. She highlighted the significance of maintaining a positive mindset and reminded everyone that assistance is a universal need. In a dark room, even a sighted person may require guidance. Her story underscores the importance of inclusion and empathy, essential elements of any organisational journey.
5. Integrating External Factors in Your IT Strategy
When crafting an IT strategy, it’s essential to align it with the broader CEO journey and organisational goals. External factors, such as market trends, technological shifts, and geopolitical influences, should be integrated to create a holistic and adaptive strategy. Over the last five years, we’ve seen how unexpected changes can profoundly impact businesses, underscoring the need for adaptability and resilience.
6. Create an IT Strategy on One Page
Lengthy documents are often overlooked or ignored. Instead, create a concise, one-page IT strategy that clearly communicates your goals and actions. This ensures that your strategy is easily understood and implemented across the organization.
7. The Growing Complexity of Applications
As applications become more prevalent, a 24/7 operational mindset is increasingly common. This requires a resilient team capable of adapting to constant changes and updates. The demand for faster delivery will continue to rise, and it’s up to organizations to determine how they will meet this challenge effectively.
8. The Huge Potential of AI
The possibilities of AI are vast. For example, Bumble is experimenting with creating AI profiles that interact with other AI agents to find matches based on preferences. However, this potential introduces significant legal implications, and we are only beginning to address these challenges.
9. Data is Key
A lot of information about AI was discussed, but it all starts with data. Understanding your data requirements and gradually building toward AI capabilities is crucial. It’s unrealistic to expect to go from basic Excel spreadsheets to becoming an AI powerhouse overnight. Respect the journey and set realistic expectations, knowing that setting up an AI strategy can be a multi-million dollar investment.
10. Security is equally critical
Data is the new gold, and data thieves, hackers, and bad actors will continue to try to access your information. While having the best software tools can help, a single employee mistake can lead to a data breach. Find a balance and continuously educate your employees because hackers never sleep.
